Acne-prone skin is a skin type that has the tendency to develop acne and pimples easily. While we refer to acne prone skin, it can be oily or dry skin. Often acne prone skin is easily associated with oily skin but even dry skin can be acne prone. Acne is not only prominent in teenager's or women's skin, but affects both genders and is not age specific. Some adults may experience acne during a certain period of time or for many years of their life.

Acne prone skin suffers from post acne marks  and scarring which is often an aftermath of acne. Acne not only affects the skin but can also take a toll on one's self confidence. Some people with acne prone skin suffer from mild acne conditions whereas some experience moderate acne to severe acne. In case of persistent moderate to severe acne, it is better to consult a dermatologist or an esthetician rather than self treat the skin conditions.

Acne is a skin condition which occurs when a hair follicle clogs up to cause white heads, black heads or pimples. The clogged pore contains dead skin cells, sebum, dirt and grime.

Causes of Acne

  • Skin type or Genetics
    If you have oily skin type, the skin already produces excess oil/sebum. This excess sebum can easily clog pores leading to acne. People with dry skin type can also experience acne even if there is no excess sebum secretion, but the skin itself has a tendency to easily clog up.
  • Hormones

  • Diet
    There is no scientific study indicating that consuming certain foods causes acne or not. However some foods do cause inflammation and identifying as well as avoiding such foods can help some people with acne prone skin. It is always better to consult your dietician or family doctor before disregarding a whole set of food for the sake of acne.
  • Using skincare products not meant for your skin type

A proper skin care routine for acne involves daily cleansing, toning and moisturizing, biweekly masking and mild exfoliation. Also please keep in mind, the following points before starting any skin care routine

  • Cleansing, Toning, Moisturizing is to be followed two times a day, once in the morning and once before bed.

  • Do not cleanse your face more than twice per day.

  • Remove makeup or sunscreen if any, before you call it a day.
